Background and Reference Values of Metals in Soils from Paraíba State, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida Júnior,Agenor Bezerra de; Nascimento,Clístenes Williams Araújo do; Biondi,Caroline Miranda; Souza,Adailson Pereira de; Barros,Felipe Martins do Rêgo.
ABSTRACT Soil contamination by heavy metals threatens ecosystems and human health. Environmental monitoring bodies need reference values for these contaminants to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities on soil contamination. Quality reference values (QRVs) reflect the natural concentrations of heavy metals in soils without anthropic interference and must be regionally established. The aim of this study was to determine the natural concentrations and quality reference values for the metals Ag, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn in soils of Paraíba state, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from 94 locations across the state in areas of native vegetation or with minimal anthropic interference. The quality reference values (QRVs) were (mg...

Beyond protein intake: bushmeat as source of micronutrients in the Amazon Ecology and Society
van Vliet, Nathalie; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR); vanvlietnathalie@yahoo.com; Schor, Tatiana; Geography Department, Universidade Federal do Amazonas; tschor@ufam.edu.br; Tellez, Leady; Independent consultant; leadyjot@hotmail.com.
Wild meat is critical for the food security and income of millions of people, especially for poor rural households. Its role as a primary source of macronutrients worldwide has been recognized, but there have been few attempts to evaluate the contribution of bushmeat consumption to micronutrient intake. This is so particularly in the context of nutritional transitions induced by modernization and globalization. Here, we calculated the role of bushmeat as a source of micronutrients in the diets of urban and peri-urban inhabitants within the Tres Fronteras (Peru, Brazil, Colombia) region in the Amazon. We gathered food intake data from 35 households using 3-day 24-h food recalls combined with food weighing. Additionally, we interviewed 105 households on food...

Chemical speciation: an instrument for evaluation of mineral bioavailability Ciência Rural
Reis,Luana Sarpa; Gonçalves,Édira Castello Branco de Andrade.
Chemical speciation allows knowing the the different chemical forms of metals in a sample. Sequential extraction procedures are used to evaluate the fractionation of the metals in solid matrices. Few studies are described in the literature related to chemical speciation in food. Residues from fruits and vegetables generated in industry processes results in significant nutritional losses. The nutritional value of a food containing a given mineral depends not only on its content, but also on its bioavailability. The present paper emphasizes the importance of chemical speciation in food, considering the amount of loss of fruits and vegetables, since they are great sources of minerals.

Copper availability as related to soil copper fractions in oxisols under liming Scientia Agricola
Nascimento,Clístenes Williams Araújo do; Fontes,Renildes Lúcio Ferreira; Melicio,Adilson César Fortes Dias.
The knowledge of the chemical forms of copper in soils and the relationships of these forms with soil copper availability are important for predicting the copper behavior in the soil-plant system. The present work studies the influence of liming on the available contents of copper as well as on the forms of copper fractions in six types of Oxisols. Soil samples, with and without liming, received copper at rates of 0.0, 20.0 and 40.0 mg dm-3 and remained incubated for 30 days. Then, available copper was extracted with Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3, DTPA and EDTA solutions, and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Additionally, soil samples were extracted in a sequential procedure to determine Cu in fractions of soil, as follows: exchangeable-Cu fraction,...

Developing Autonomous Observing Systems for Micronutrient Trace Metals ArchiMer
Grand, Maxime M.; Laes, Agathe; Fietz, Susanne; Resing, Joseph A.; Obata, Hajime; Luther, George W.; Tagliabue, Alessandro; Achterberg, Eric P.; Middag, Rob; Tovar-sánchez, Antonio; Bowie, Andrew R..
Trace metal micronutrients are integral to the functioning of marine ecosystems and the export of particulate carbon to the deep ocean. Although much progress has been made in mapping the distributions of metal micronutrients throughout the ocean over the last 30 years, there remain information gaps, most notable during seasonal transitions and in remote regions. The next challenge is to develop in situ sensing technologies necessary to capture the spatial and temporal variabilities of micronutrients characterized with short residence times, highly variable source terms, and sub-nanomolar concentrations in open ocean settings. Such an effort will allow investigation of the biogeochemical processes at the necessary resolution to constrain fluxes, residence...
